Exciting News for the New Year.
We are going to seek charity status as this will help us grow and enable us to apply for many more grants.
We also aim to change our name (*reasons given below) and this is an appropriate time to do this. We would like your help in choosing a new name. We’ve lots of ideas but we would very much like to hear yours. Please send us your suggestions by 14 January (just reply to this email). We will then ask our leader and volunteers to select a short list and our board will then make the final decision (once we have checked for conflict with other organisations, availability of domain name etc). Please feel free to suggest anything you like. Many of our ideas include words such as wheels, bikes, cycling, Oxford, all, etc etc but we want your ideas for something snappy and memorable. Any name we choose may be followed by words such as ‘Oxford’ and /or ‘inclusive cycling’ if necessary or appropriate.
Hospitals and A&E depts under significant pressure
Many hospitals, including those in our area, have declared critical incidents
due to overwhelming demand from people with Covid or Flu, shortages of staff and shortage of beds. Waiting times in A&E can be dangerously long. To reduce the risk of anyone needing urgent hospital treatment, we want to ensure we are taking appropriate precautions. Although we are outside, we recommend social distancing (and using masks when this isn’t possible) and taking care to avoid accidents. Many people currently have a variety of flu symptoms – please do not attend if you have a cough or cold or feel unwell.
Hand gel will be available for you to use and we will also sanitize cycles again between users.
Please remember we aim to open regardless of the weather (unless there’s a serious weather warning). If we have to close we will email and put a note on the website. Don’t forget to wrap up warm and bring gloves and bring waterproofs just in case! Hot drinks also available.
The Wheels for All Oxford Team
www.wfaoxford.org
* Why we want to change our name:
Wheels for All Oxford was initially set up in 2010 with help and support from Cycling Projects (a charity in the north west). However, despite many promises, very little support has been received from them since. They have recently adopted Wheels for All as their main brand and this is causing confusion with the many independent groups (such as ours) which also use this description. We could keep our existing name but we think this would imply to many that we are associated with the north west charity. They are also aiming to create an affiliation model for local groups and we (and several other groups) much prefer to maintain our independence
